Our thoughts
This is the lens I point portrait and wedding shooters to when they want “that look.” At f/1.2 it draws the subject out of the background with a softness that’s genuinely special, and unlike a lot of fast fifties it’s impressively sharp even wide open. It’s also a brilliant low-light tool for dim receptions and available-light work. A couple of honest notes from me: the depth of field at f/1.2 is paper-thin, so you’ll lean on the camera’s eye autofocus and may stop down a little for groups; and it has no built-in stabilisation, so I’d use it on a body with in-body IS for handheld work. It’s also a substantial lens. But for portraits and the f/1.2 look, very little touches it.

Two things: outstanding low-light performance (it gathers a lot of light, so you can shoot in dim conditions at lower ISO), and a very shallow depth of field that melts backgrounds into smooth bokeh while keeping your subject sharp. It’s the look that makes portraits really stand out.
At f/1.2 the in-focus zone is very thin, so accurate focus is key. Use the camera’s eye-detection autofocus for portraits, and if you’re shooting two or more people, stopping down slightly (say f/2 to f/2.8) keeps everyone sharp. For single-subject portraits, wide open is where the magic is.
No — there’s no optical IS in the lens. For sharp handheld shots in low light, use it on an RF body with in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), which most current Canon mirrorless bodies have. The fast f/1.2 aperture also lets you keep shutter speeds high.
The f/1.2 L is in a different league for low-light ability, bokeh quality, sharpness wide open and build — it’s the professional choice. The f/1.8 is tiny, light and inexpensive, and a great everyday fifty, but it can’t match the rendering or low-light reach. Rent the f/1.2 L when image quality and the look are the priority.
