Rent the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II in Canada — Sony’s flagship wide-angle zoom, redesigned to be lighter, smaller and sharper than the original. A constant f/2.8 across a versatile 16-35mm range makes it a go-to for landscape, astro, weddings, real estate and wide-angle video. Key points:

  • Versatile 16-35mm wide-angle range with a bright, constant f/2.8 aperture
  • Improved G Master optics (two XA elements, Super ED and ED glass) — excellent corner sharpness
  • Four XD Linear Motors with reduced focus breathing; de-clickable aperture ring for video
  • 20% lighter and 10% smaller than the original; close 0.22m focus; 82mm filters

Our thoughts

This is the wide zoom I’d hand most Sony shooters — it’s sharp into the corners, noticeably lighter than the original, and the de-clickable aperture ring and low focus breathing make it just as good for video as stills. If your main goal is the night sky, the 14mm f/1.8 prime is brighter, but for everyday wide work this is the more versatile pick.

  • Chasing the night sky? The Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM prime is brighter for astro and aurora.
  • It takes standard 82mm filters — add a polariser or ND if you need one.
  • Shooting landscapes or long exposures? Add a tripod.

Q&A

The Mark II is about 20% lighter and 10% smaller, with improved corner-to-corner sharpness, faster autofocus (four XD linear motors) and reduced focus breathing. It also adds a de-clickable aperture ring. If you have the choice, the II is the better lens in nearly every way.

Yes — the constant f/2.8 and 16mm wide end handle night skies and big landscapes well, with sharp corners for clean stars. If astro is your absolute priority, the 14mm f/1.8 prime gathers more light; but this zoom is far more versatile for general wide work.

Very — the reduced focus breathing keeps framing stable as focus changes, the aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent exposure changes, and it’s light enough for gimbal and handheld work. A strong choice for wide-angle filmmaking and vlogging.

Down to 0.22m (about 8.6"), which is impressively close for a wide zoom — great for dramatic wide-angle close-ups where a foreground subject looms large against a sweeping background.

A standard 82mm front thread, so polarisers, NDs and other filters are easy to find. We can add filters to your order.
