Rent the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS in Canada — Sony’s versatile G Master super-telephoto zoom for wildlife, birds, sports and aviation. It combines excellent sharpness, fast autofocus and surprisingly close focusing in a lens light enough to carry and hand-hold. Key points:
Versatile 100-400mm range with G Master optics (Super ED + ED elements)
Close 0.98m focus with 0.35x magnification — unusually good for a telephoto
Works with Sony 1.4x / 2x teleconverters (up to 800mm); rotating tripod collar; 77mm filters
Our thoughts
This is the Sony tele I recommend most for all-round wildlife and sports work. The 100-400mm range is genuinely flexible — wide enough at 100mm for larger animals or to frame an athlete in context, long enough at 400mm to reach in. What I really like is the close focusing: at 0.35x it’s almost macro-like, so you can shoot butterflies and small details as well as distant subjects. It’s sharp, the autofocus is quick, and it’s light enough to hand-hold for long stretches. If you need more reach, the Sony 200-600mm goes further, but it’s heavier and starts at 200mm. For a do-everything E-mount telephoto that you can take anywhere, this G Master is hard to beat — and it takes teleconverters if you do need 800mm.

Q&A
The 100-400mm is lighter, starts wider at 100mm and focuses closer (great for smaller subjects), with premium G Master build. The 200-600mm reaches further (to 600mm), has an internal zoom that doesn’t extend, and is more affordable, but it’s bigger and heavier. Choose the 100-400mm for versatility and portability; the 200-600mm when you need maximum reach.
Yes — it’s compatible with Sony’s FE 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The 1.4x gives roughly 140-560mm and the 2x gives 200-800mm, with autofocus retained on compatible bodies (best in good light). We can add a teleconverter to your order.
Down to 0.98m with 0.35x magnification, which is excellent for a telephoto — close enough for near-macro shots of insects, flowers and small details, as well as distant wildlife. It makes the lens far more versatile than its focal range alone suggests.
Yes — at around 1.4kg it’s genuinely manageable handheld, and with Optical SteadyShot (plus your body’s in-body IS) it’s steady at long focal lengths. For very long sessions a monopod helps, and the lens has a removable rotating tripod collar.
A standard 77mm front thread, so filters are widely available and affordable. We can add a polariser or ND to your rental if you need one.
