Almost everyone — it’s the classic do-everything professional zoom. The 24-70mm range covers wide environmental shots, standard framing and short portraits, and the constant f/2.8 handles low light with nice background separation. It’s the standard choice for weddings, events, documentary, travel and general pro work on Nikon Z.
No — there’s no VR in the lens. For sharp handheld shots, especially in low light or video, use it on a Nikon Z body with in-body stabilisation (IBIS), which the Z full-frame bodies have.
The newer S II adds an internal zoom (the barrel doesn’t extend) and some refinements, but this original S is optically excellent and remains a superb, more cost-effective workhorse. For most shoots the image quality difference is negligible — the S II’s main draw is the internal-zoom handling.
The OLED panel on the barrel shows settings like aperture and focus distance at a glance, which is handy in the field. The programmable control ring can be set to adjust aperture, ISO or exposure compensation directly from the lens. There’s also an assignable L.Fn button.
It’s the middle of the classic three-lens kit — add the 14-24mm f/2.8 for wide work and a 70-200mm for reach, and you’ve got nearly every professional situation covered at f/2.8. On its own it handles the majority of weddings, events and editorial shoots.
