Rent the Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR in Canada — the farthest-reaching zoom in Nikon’s Z range and a brilliant-value choice for wildlife, birds, aviation and field sports. Huge 600mm reach, an internal zoom that stays put, and effective VR make it a hugely popular long lens. Key points:

  • Big 180-600mm reach — the longest Z-mount zoom — for distant subjects
  • Internal zoom (length stays fixed) with a quick 70° throw; helps balance and tracking
  • VR stabilisation rated to 5.5 stops; 6 ED elements for clean, sharp results
  • Works with Nikon Z 1.4x / 2x teleconverters (840mm or 1200mm); rotating tripod collar

Our thoughts

For Nikon shooters chasing wildlife or birds, this is the long lens I recommend first — 600mm of reach with an internal zoom that keeps the balance steady for tracking, at a price that’s genuinely great value. It’s around 2kg and f/6.3 at the long end, so I’d use a monopod for long days and keep it to good light — but the reach-per-dollar is hard to beat, and it takes teleconverters too.

Q&A

The 180-600mm reaches further (to 600mm), has an internal zoom and is excellent value. The 100-400mm is the premium S-line option — lighter, with higher-end optics and much closer focusing, and it starts wider at 100mm. Choose the 180-600mm for maximum reach on a budget; the 100-400mm for image quality, portability and versatility.

Yes — with the Nikon Z 1.4x it reaches 840mm (f/9) and with the 2x up to 1200mm (f/13), both keeping autofocus on compatible bodies. You’ll need good light at those settings because the effective aperture gets small. We can add a teleconverter to your order.

The lens doesn’t change length as you zoom, so the balance stays consistent (great on a monopod or gimbal), it doesn’t pump air as you zoom (better for dust and weather sealing), and the quick 70° throw lets you go from 180mm to 600mm fast without the barrel shifting your framing.

In good light, no — current Nikon Z bodies focus confidently at f/6.3 and the images are sharp. In dull light you’ll raise ISO to keep shutter speeds high for sharp shots of moving subjects. It’s a daylight-friendly wildlife and sports lens.

In bursts, yes — at around 2kg with VR (plus your body’s in-body stabilisation) it’s manageable handheld, helped by the steady balance of the internal zoom. For long wildlife or birding sessions a monopod makes a real difference, and the rotating tripod collar makes mounting easy.
