Rent the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM in Canada — a fast, modern hybrid prime built equally for stills and high-end video. The classic 35mm field of view, a bright f/1.4 aperture and a video-focused design make it a superb lens for documentary, environmental portraits, street and filmmaking. Key points:

  • Fast f/1.4 aperture with an 11-blade iris for soft, cinematic bokeh
  • Dual-motor autofocus (Nano USM + Voice Coil Motor) — fast, quiet and smooth for video
  • Minimal focus breathing and a manual iris (aperture) ring — designed with cine work in mind
  • L-series weather sealing; compact and 27% lighter than the EF equivalent

Our thoughts

I really rate this lens because it’s a true do-both prime. As a stills lens, 35mm f/1.4 is a classic for documentary, street and environmental portraits, with beautiful subject separation in low light. But Canon clearly built it with video in mind too: the focus breathing is minimal, the dual-motor autofocus is quiet and smooth, and there’s a proper iris ring for controlling aperture by hand. It’s also part of Canon’s VCM prime family (alongside the 24mm and 50mm), which share the same size and filter thread, so swapping primes on a gimbal is quick and balanced. The one thing to plan around is that it has no built-in stabilisation, so I’d run it on a body with in-body IS for handheld work. For hybrid shooters it’s one of the most versatile primes we rent.

Compatibility & what you might add

  • Fits any Canon RF-mount body — pair it with an in-body-stabilised body for steadier handheld work.
  • Shooting video? Its low breathing and quiet AF pair well with a gimbal — and it matches the other VCM primes for fast swaps.
  • It takes 67mm filters — add a polariser or ND if you need one.

Q&A

VCM stands for Voice Coil Motor. This lens pairs a Nano USM motor (driving a floating focus group) with a VCM (driving the rear focus group), so it can focus very fast, quietly and smoothly. That dual system is especially good for video, where you want silent, confident autofocus that doesn’t hunt.

Yes — it’s designed for it. Focus breathing is minimal (so the framing barely shifts as focus changes), there’s a manual iris ring for smooth aperture control, and the autofocus is silent. It also shares its size and 67mm filter thread with Canon’s other VCM primes, which makes swapping lenses on a gimbal quick and balanced.

No — there’s no optical IS in the lens. For sharp handheld shots, especially in low light or video, use it on an RF body with in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), which most current Canon mirrorless bodies have.

The f/1.4 L is brighter, has premium L-series build and the video-focused features (low breathing, iris ring, dual-motor AF). The f/1.8 Macro is smaller, more affordable, has built-in IS and can focus closer for semi-macro. Choose the f/1.4 L for low light, image quality and hybrid video; the f/1.8 for a lighter, budget-friendly everyday 35mm.

A common 67mm thread, shared with Canon’s other VCM primes, so filters are easy to find and swap between lenses. We can add a polariser or ND to your order.
