What’s the connection to RED?
Nikon acquired RED Digital Cinema, and the ZR is the first camera from that partnership — the debut of Nikon’s Z CINEMA series. It brings RED’s colour science (Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB) and a new R3D NE codec, a variant of RED’s REDCODE RAW, into a compact Nikon body. In short, you get the RED cinematic look and internal RAW at a fraction of the usual size and cost.
What can it record internally?
A lot — internal 12-bit RAW up to 6K/60p in the new R3D NE format, plus Nikon N-RAW, ProRes RAW and ProRes 422 HQ, and efficient H.265/H.264. With 15+ stops of dynamic range and dual base ISO, it’s built to deliver highly gradeable, cinema-quality footage straight to the card.
How is the audio a ‘world first’?
The ZR is the first camera to support 32-bit float audio recording with both its built-in and external microphones. In practice, that means you’re far less likely to ruin a take with clipped or too-quiet audio — you can set levels in post with huge latitude. It’s a genuinely useful feature for run-and-gun and interview work.
Does it have a viewfinder?
No — it’s a screen-based cinema camera, with a large, bright 4″ vari-angle touchscreen (DCI-P3, 1000 nits) for composing. In very bright conditions an external monitor helps; we can add one to your order.
What lenses and cards should I use?
It takes any Nikon Z lens natively, and F-mount lenses via the FTZ adapter. For internal 6K RAW you’ll want a high-capacity CFexpress Type B card (there’s also a microSD slot for proxies). We can include suitable media, lenses and spare batteries with your rental.
