Rent the Canon EOS R8 in Canada — a remarkably light, affordable full-frame mirrorless that borrows its sensor and autofocus from the pricier R6 Mark II. It’s a superb travel, content-creation and second-body option for photographers and hybrid shooters on the RF system. Key points:
- 24.2MP full-frame sensor with DIGIC X — the same core as the R6 Mark II, for excellent stills and low-light results
- 6K-oversampled 4K60 10-bit video, plus Full HD 180fps for slow motion
- Up to 40fps continuous shooting with the electronic shutter, with pre-shooting to catch the moment
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 1,053 points and subject detection, in a body weighing only ~461g
Our thoughts
The R8 is the easiest way into Canon full-frame — it’s tiny and light, yet it shares the R6 II’s sensor and autofocus, so image quality and tracking are genuinely excellent. It’s a favourite of mine for travel and as a second body. Two honest caveats to plan around: there’s no in-body stabilisation (so lean on lens IS), and it has a single card slot and a small battery, so pack spares for a long day.

Q&A
How does the R8 compare to the R6 Mark II?
They share the same 24.2MP sensor and DIGIC X processor, so image quality, autofocus and much of the video spec are very close. The R8 is smaller, lighter and more affordable, but it drops in-body stabilisation, uses a single card slot and a smaller battery, and has a simpler control layout. For travel and lightweight hybrid work it’s excellent value; for demanding pro use the R6 II adds robustness.
Does it have in-body stabilisation?
No — the R8 doesn’t have mechanical in-body IS. It relies on the optical stabilisation in RF lenses for stills, and offers Movie Digital IS for video (which applies a small crop). For handheld work we’d suggest pairing it with a stabilised RF lens.
Is it good for video?
Yes — it punches above its size. It records 6K-oversampled 4K60 in 10-bit for detailed, gradeable footage, plus Full HD at 180fps for slow motion, with reliable Dual Pixel AF II tracking. It’s a strong choice for creators, interviews and run-and-gun, especially where a light, compact body matters.
What lenses can I use on it?
It has a Canon RF mount, so all RF lenses work natively with full autofocus. You can also adapt EF and EF-S lenses using Canon’s EF-EOS R adapter. Let us know your glass and we’ll include the right adapter.
Does it have more than one card slot?
No — the R8 has a single SD (UHS-II) card slot. If you need in-camera backup, that’s worth bearing in mind, but a fast, high-capacity card handles its 4K and high-speed burst modes comfortably. We can add suitable media to your order.
