The Z9 is Nikon’s no-compromise flagship, and it does genuinely everything. The stacked sensor means there’s no mechanical shutter at all — and effectively no rolling shutter — so you can shoot silently at 20fps without distortion. It’s a sports and wildlife weapon, but the 45.7MP files and 8K/N-RAW video make it equally at home on commercial and film work. The integrated grip and huge battery life mean it just keeps going. It’s big and heavy, but that’s the trade for a true flagship.

Why does ‘no mechanical shutter’ matter?
The Z9’s stacked sensor reads out so fast that Nikon removed the mechanical shutter entirely. In practice that means completely silent shooting, no shutter wear, flash sync flexibility, and effectively no rolling-shutter distortion even on fast-moving subjects — a big advantage for sports, wildlife and discreet shooting.
Is it a stills camera or a video camera?
Both, at the highest level. For stills it shoots up to 20fps RAW with pro-grade autofocus, ideal for sports and wildlife. For video it records 8K 30p internally, 4K up to 120p, and 12-bit N-RAW up to 8.3K — genuine filmmaking specs. It’s a true hybrid flagship.
How good is the autofocus?
Class-leading — a 493-point system with deep-learning subject detection that recognises nine subject types (people, animals, birds, vehicles and more) and holds onto them tenaciously. Combined with the fast sensor and 20fps bursts, it’s exceptional for action and unpredictable subjects.
What lenses and cards does it need?
It takes any Nikon Z lens natively, and F-mount lenses via the FTZ adapter. For the 8K video, N-RAW and high-speed burst modes, you’ll want fast, high-capacity CFexpress Type B cards — it has two slots. We can include suitable media and the right lenses with your rental.
How big and heavy is it?
