Rent the Sony a7R VI in Canada — Sony’s high-resolution flagship, now built around an all-new 66.8MP fully-stacked sensor that finally pairs class-leading detail with real speed. It’s the camera for landscape, studio, commercial, fashion, architecture and fine-art work on Sony full-frame. Key points:

  • 66.8MP fully-stacked Exmor RS sensor with 16 stops of dynamic range and base ISO 100
  • Up to 30fps full-resolution 14-bit RAW, with roughly 5.6x less rolling shutter than the a7R V
  • 8K 30p (8.2K oversampled) and 4K 120p (5K oversampled) 10-bit video with sensor-level dual gain
  • Up to 8.5-stop in-body stabilisation, a 9.44M-dot OLED viewfinder and upgraded AI-driven autofocus

Our thoughts

The a7R VI is the high-res R-series all grown up. You still get that enormous 66.8MP of detail for landscapes, studio and commercial work — but the new stacked sensor means it’s genuinely fast now, with 30fps bursts and far less rolling shutter, so it doubles as a credible action and wildlife body. Add 8K video and that stunning 9.44M-dot finder and it’s about the most versatile high-resolution camera Sony has made. Files are big, so bring fast, roomy cards.

Compatibility & what you might add

  • Pair it with any Sony E-mount lens — the resolution rewards sharp G Master glass. For landscapes and studio, a fast wide or standard prime is a natural match.

Q&A

What’s new versus the a7R V?

The headline is the sensor: it moves to an all-new 66.8MP fully-stacked design, which brings a big speed jump — up to 30fps full-resolution RAW and roughly 5.6x less rolling shutter — plus 8K video and 16 stops of dynamic range. Stabilisation improves to 8.5 stops, the autofocus gains a dedicated AI unit, and it keeps the superb 9.44M-dot viewfinder. In short, it’s the high-res camera made fast.

Is it only for landscape and studio, or can it shoot action?

Both, now. The resolution makes it ideal for landscape, architecture, studio, fashion and commercial work where detail is everything. But thanks to the stacked sensor and 30fps bursts with minimal rolling shutter, it’s also genuinely capable for wildlife, sports and events — something the previous high-res models couldn’t really claim.

What memory cards does it need?

It has two card slots, each taking CFexpress Type A or UHS-II SD cards. For the fastest burst shooting and 8K video, CFexpress Type A is ideal, and you’ll want plenty of capacity because the 66.8MP files are large. We can include suitable cards with your rental.

How good is the autofocus?

Excellent — it uses a dedicated AI processing unit within the BIONZ XR2 for Real-time Recognition AF+, with seven selectable subject types including people, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains and airplanes. Sony has focused on more stable tracking of distant subjects and quicker switching between subject types.

Which lenses get the best from it?

Any Sony E-mount lens fits, but a 66.8MP sensor really shows the difference between good and great glass — Sony’s G Master primes and zooms are the natural pairing to resolve all that detail. Tell us what you’re shooting and we’ll suggest the sharpest options for the job.
