Rent the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM in Canada — the do-everything super-telephoto zoom for wildlife, birds, sports, aviation and travel. It packs a huge 5x reach into a lens light enough to carry and shoot handheld all day, which is exactly why it’s one of the most popular long lenses on the RF system. Key points:

  • Versatile 100-500mm range — short telephoto right through to super-telephoto in one lens
  • Dual Nano USM autofocus, fast and near-silent, with full-time manual override
  • Optical IS up to 5 stops; light (~1.37kg) and compact for its reach, with a 77mm filter thread
  • L-series weather sealing; works with RF 1.4x / 2x teleconverters in the 300-500mm range

Our thoughts

If someone’s heading out for wildlife, birds or a day at the track, this is usually the first lens I suggest. The 100-500mm range is genuinely do-it-all, the autofocus is quick and quiet, and the thing I value most is how light it is — you can actually hand-hold it for a long session without a monopod, which you can’t say about most lenses with this reach. The honest trade-off is the aperture: it’s f/7.1 at the long end, so it loves daylight and you’ll lean on higher ISO in dim conditions. If you need f/2.8 reach for indoor sports or low light, look at the RF 100-300mm f/2.8 instead — but for outdoor wildlife and sports, this is the smart, portable choice, and it takes affordable 77mm filters too.

Q&A

The 100-500mm gives you far more reach in a much lighter, more affordable-to-shoot package — ideal for outdoor wildlife, birds and sports. The 100-300mm f/2.8 is brighter and better for low light and indoor sports, but it’s heavier, pricier and tops out at 300mm. Pick the 100-500mm for reach and portability; the 100-300mm for speed.

Yes, but only within the 300-500mm part of the zoom. The RF 1.4x gives roughly 420-700mm (f/10) and the RF 2x gives roughly 600-1000mm (f/14). Autofocus still works on RF bodies that support those apertures, typically with good light. We can add a teleconverter to your order.

In good light, not at all — modern RF bodies focus confidently at f/7.1 and the image quality is excellent. In dim conditions you’ll need to raise ISO to keep shutter speeds up. If most of your shooting is low light or indoors, a faster lens like the RF 100-300mm f/2.8 is worth considering.

Yes — at about 1.37kg it’s genuinely light for a 500mm lens, and with up to 5 stops of image stabilisation most people are comfortable shooting it handheld. For very long sessions a monopod takes the strain off, but it’s not essential.

A common 77mm thread, so filters are widely available and affordable. We can add a polariser or ND to your rental if you need one.
