Rent the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM in Canada — the classic professional standard zoom, and for many shooters the only lens they need on a job. Constant f/2.8, image stabilisation and that hugely useful 24-70mm range make it the default workhorse for weddings, events, documentary and portraits. Key points:
Versatile 24-70mm range with a bright, constant f/2.8 aperture — wide to short-portrait in one
Optical IS up to 5 stops (up to 8 with Coordinated IS on IBIS bodies) — a key upgrade over the EF version
Nano USM autofocus (fast and quiet); 9-blade aperture; assignable control ring
Close 0.21m focus at the wide end; L-series weather sealing; 82mm filters
Our thoughts
If I could only put one zoom in a kit, it would probably be this. The 24-70mm f/2.8 is the lens that has covered weddings, events and editorial work for decades, and the RF version finally adds image stabilisation, which makes a real difference for handheld stills and video. It’s sharp across the range, focuses fast and quietly, and the close-focusing at the wide end is handy for detail shots. Compared with the newer 24-105mm f/2.8, this one is lighter and more compact — you give up a bit of reach but it’s easier to carry all day. For most working photographers this is the reliable, no-drama standard zoom I’d recommend first.

Compatibility & what you might add
Fits any Canon RF-mount body — pair it with the camera that suits your shoot.
Almost everyone — it’s the classic do-everything professional zoom. The 24-70mm range covers wide environmental shots, standard framing and short portraits, and the constant f/2.8 handles low light and gives nice background blur. It’s the standard choice for weddings, events, documentary, travel and general pro work.
The 24-105mm f/2.8 offers more reach at the same aperture but is noticeably bigger and heavier. The 28-70mm f/2 is brighter still but very large and loses the wide 24mm end. This 24-70mm f/2.8 is the balanced choice — the lightest and most compact of the three while still giving you pro-grade f/2.8 coverage.
Yes — up to 5 stops of optical IS, and up to 8 stops with Coordinated IS on bodies that have in-body stabilisation. This was a major addition over the older EF 24-70mm f/2.8, and it really helps with handheld stills in low light and steadier video.
Down to 0.21m (about 0.7 ft) at the wide end, which is impressively close for a standard zoom — great for detail and near-macro style shots of food, rings and products without changing lenses.
A standard 82mm front thread, so polarisers, NDs and other filters are easy to find. We can add filters to your order.
