Rent the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II in Canada — the definitive professional standard zoom for Sony, and for many shooters the only lens they need on a job. Constant f/2.8, class-leading sharpness and a much lighter design make it the default workhorse for weddings, events, documentary and hybrid photo/video. Key points:

  • Versatile 24-70mm range with a bright, constant f/2.8 aperture
  • Top-tier G Master optics (XA, Super ED and ED elements); 11-blade aperture for smooth bokeh
  • Four XD Linear Motors with reduced focus breathing; de-clickable aperture ring for video
  • 22% lighter and 18% smaller than the original; close 0.21m focus (0.32x at 70mm)

Our thoughts

If I could put one zoom on a Sony body, it’s this — it’s sharp across the whole range, much lighter than the original, and the low focus breathing and de-clickable aperture make it as good for video as stills. Just note there’s no built-in stabilisation, so I’d run it on a body with in-body IS for handheld work.

Compatibility & what you might add

Q&A

The Mark II is about 22% lighter and 18% smaller, noticeably sharper, with much faster autofocus (four XD linear motors) and reduced focus breathing. It also adds a de-clickable aperture ring and improved close focusing. If you have the choice, the II is the better lens in nearly every respect.

No — there’s no optical stabilisation in the lens. For sharp handheld shots, especially in low light or video, use it on a Sony body with in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), which all current full-frame Alpha bodies have.

Very — focus breathing is minimised (framing stays stable as focus changes), the aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent exposure changes, and the lighter weight suits gimbal and handheld work. It’s an excellent hybrid photo/video standard zoom.

Down to 0.21m at the wide end, with 0.32x magnification at 70mm — impressively close for a standard zoom. That makes it handy for near-macro detail shots of food, rings and products without switching lenses.

It’s the classic middle of a three-lens kit — add the 16-35mm f/2.8 for wide work and a 70-200mm f/2.8 for reach, and you’ve got nearly every professional situation covered at f/2.8. On its own it handles the vast majority of weddings, events and editorial shoots.
