Rent the Sony FE 28-70mm f/2 GM in Canada — a landmark lens: the world’s first autofocus zoom with a constant f/2 aperture. It puts the light-gathering and bokeh of fast prime lenses into a single zoom, making it a remarkable tool for weddings, events, portraits and low-light video. Key points:

  • Constant f/2 across 28-70mm — prime-like brightness and background blur with zoom flexibility
  • Fast quad XD Linear Motor autofocus — keeps up with high-speed stills and video
  • G Master optics (XA, Super ED, ED); reduced focus breathing and a de-clickable aperture ring
  • No in-lens stabilisation — best paired with an in-body-stabilised body

Our thoughts

This is a genuinely special lens — a constant f/2 zoom that can stand in for a bag of fast primes, which is a dream for dim wedding venues and events. Unlike older f/2 zoom designs it has quick, modern autofocus too. The catch is that it’s big, has no built-in stabilisation, and won’t take teleconverters — so I’d run it on an IBIS body and treat it as a low-light specialist.

Q&A

It’s a full stop brighter than the f/2.8 standard zooms, giving more light in dim conditions and shallower, more prime-like background blur — all while letting you zoom from 28mm to 70mm. In practice it can replace several fast prime lenses, which is why it’s so appealing for weddings and events.

The 28-70mm f/2 is a full stop brighter with more prime-like rendering, but it’s larger and heavier, starts at 28mm rather than 24mm, and (like the f/2.8) has no stabilisation. The 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is lighter, more compact and has a wider 24mm end. Choose the f/2 for maximum low-light performance and bokeh; the f/2.8 II for a lighter, more versatile everyday zoom.

No — there’s no optical stabilisation in the lens. To keep handheld shots sharp, especially in low light, pair it with a Sony body that has in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), which all current full-frame Alpha bodies have.

Yes — the f/2 aperture is superb in low light, focus breathing is minimised, and the aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent exposure changes. Just bear in mind its size and the lack of stabilisation, so a gimbal or IBIS body helps for handheld work.

No — this lens isn’t compatible with Sony’s 1.4x or 2x teleconverters. If you need more reach, a telephoto zoom like the 70-200mm or 100-400mm is the way to go — just ask and we’ll help you build the kit.
