The Nikon ZR is Nikon’s first purpose-built cinema camera, born from its acquisition of RED and the desire to deliver accessible, high-end video capabilities. Designed for solo creators, hybrid shooters, and as a B-cam for RED workflows, the ZR blends Nikon’s optical strength and autofocus heritage with RED’s powerful colour science.
It empowers filmmakers to record internal RAW (via R3D NE) with full post flexibility — changing ISO or white balance after the fact — while also providing baked-in LUT preview support to maintain creative control during shooting.
All this is wrapped in a compact, lightweight chassis — no viewfinder, but a bright 4" flip display — making it highly portable and suitable for run-and-gun shooting, gimbals, drones, or tight rigs.
Audio is a standout: with 32-bit float internally, you can record dialogue or ambience without setting gain or worrying about clipping — the camera captures a wide dynamic range of sound automatically.
Whether you’re pairing it with cinema lenses, Nikon Z lenses, or adapted glass, the ZR can serve in multi-camera RED shoots, solo documentary rigs, or creative narrative setups.
