Compatibility & what you might add
Fits any Canon RF-mount body — pair it with the camera that suits your shoot.
The 200-800mm gives far more reach (to 800mm vs 500mm) at a lower rental cost, which is its whole appeal for distant wildlife and birds. The 100-500mm L is brighter, lighter, shorter and has premium L-series build, making it better in lower light and more versatile at the wide end. Choose the 200-800mm for maximum reach in good light; the 100-500mm for speed and all-round use.
Yes — it’s compatible with the RF 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, pushing reach towards roughly 1120mm or even 1600mm. Be aware the aperture becomes very small at those settings, so you’ll need strong light for autofocus and acceptable shutter speeds. We can add a teleconverter to your order.
In good daylight, not really — modern RF bodies autofocus confidently at f/9 and the results are sharp. In dull or fading light you’ll need to raise ISO to keep shutter speeds high enough for sharp shots of moving subjects. It’s very much a “bring the light” lens.
Yes, in bursts — at around 2kg with up to 5.5 stops of stabilisation it’s manageable handheld, which is remarkable for an 800mm lens. For longer sessions or maximum sharpness, a monopod makes a big difference, and it has a tripod collar for mounting.
It uses a large 95mm front filter. If you need a polariser or ND, let us know in advance and we’ll help you sort it.
