Rent the Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS in Canada — Sony’s flagship super-telephoto prime, pairing a bright f/4 aperture with a build that’s remarkably light for its class. It’s the top choice for serious wildlife, birding, sports and aviation on Sony full-frame. Key points:

  • 600mm at a fast, constant f/4 — the reach and light-gathering the big primes are built for
  • One of the lightest 600mm f/4 lenses made, at around 3,040g (6.7 lb), so it’s genuinely field-portable
  • G Master optics with an XA element, three fluorite and two ED elements for edge-to-edge sharpness
  • Optical SteadyShot stabilisation and teleconverter support to 840mm f/5.6 or 1200mm f/8

Our thoughts

This is the dream wildlife and sports lens — 600mm at a bright f/4, and Sony have made it shockingly light for what it is, so you can actually hand-hold it for bursts rather than being tied to a hide.

Compatibility & what you might add

Q&A

How heavy is it — can I hand-hold it?

At about 6.7 lb it’s one of the lightest 600mm f/4 lenses ever made, so short handheld bursts are very doable — especially with the built-in stabilisation. For extended sessions, though, most shooters run it on a monopod or gimbal head to stay comfortable and steady. We can add support to your order.

Can I use it with teleconverters?

Yes — it’s compatible with Sony’s FE 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, taking you to 840mm f/5.6 or a huge 1200mm f/8, with autofocus retained on current Alpha bodies. It’s a great way to add extreme reach for distant birds and wildlife; just add a teleconverter to your rental.

What filters does it take?

There’s no front filter thread — the front element is far too large. Instead, the lens has a rear drop-in slot that takes 40.5mm round filters, so you can use a polariser or ND without an oversized front filter. Let us know and we’ll include what you need.

Is it good in low light?

Yes — the constant f/4 aperture is a big part of the appeal, gathering far more light than a variable-aperture zoom at 600mm. Combined with Optical SteadyShot and modern Sony high-ISO performance, it’s well suited to dawn, dusk and indoor sports where the light is challenging.

Which Sony cameras does it fit?

Any Sony E-mount camera — every full-frame Alpha and Cinema Line FX body, plus Sony APS-C bodies. On full-frame you get the native 600mm; on APS-C the crop gives you roughly 900mm of equivalent reach.
