Our thoughts
The constant f/4.5 is the headline for me — you hold onto that brightness right out at 400mm, where the older zoom dropped to f/5.6, and the internal zoom means it balances beautifully on a gimbal and never draws dust in as you zoom. Just know it’s a proper pro lens: heavier than the old one, and it takes big 95mm front (or rear drop-in) filters, so plan for that.

How is this different from the older 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6?
Three big things: it holds a constant f/4.5 all the way to 400mm (the old lens dropped to f/5.6), it uses an internal zoom so the barrel doesn’t extend, and its autofocus is driven by four XD Linear Motors. The trade-off is size and weight — it’s a larger, heavier lens than its predecessor.
Can I use it with teleconverters?
Yes — it’s compatible with Sony’s FE 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, giving 140–560mm at f/6.3 or 200–800mm at f/9, with full autofocus and auto-exposure retained. A teleconverter is a great way to add reach for distant wildlife; we can add one to your order.
What filters does it take?
Two options: a standard 95mm screw-in filter on the front, or 40.5mm filters dropped into the rear filter holder that’s built into the lens (included). The rear drop-in is handy for slim polarisers or NDs without needing a large, expensive front filter. Just ask and we’ll add what you need.
Is it good for gimbal work and video?
