Rent the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM in Canada — the classic fast telephoto zoom, reborn as the lightest and shortest 70-200mm f/2.8 Canon has ever made. Constant f/2.8, fast dual-motor autofocus and a compact telescoping design make it a go-to for portraits, weddings, events and sports. Key points:
Versatile 70-200mm telephoto range with a bright, constant f/2.8 aperture
Dual Nano USM autofocus — fast, quiet and great for both stills and video
Optical IS up to 5 stops (more with Coordinated IS on IBIS bodies)
Canon’s most compact 70-200mm f/2.8 thanks to a telescoping (extending) zoom design
Our thoughts
The 70-200mm f/2.8 is the other half of the classic two-lens kit alongside a 24-70mm, and this RF version’s headline trick is how small and light it is — it collapses down short enough to pack easily, which makes a real difference on a long wedding day or while travelling. The autofocus is quick and quiet, the stabilisation is strong, and at f/2.8 it’s superb for compressed portraits, candids and sideline sport. Two things I always mention: the zoom telescopes (the barrel extends as you zoom out), which is the trade-off for that compact size; and this original version doesn’t accept teleconverters, so if you need more than 200mm of reach, look at the RF 100-500mm or 100-300mm instead. For its core job, though, it’s a brilliant, dependable lens.

Q&A
No — this original RF 70-200mm f/2.8 isn’t compatible with the RF 1.4x or 2x extenders, due to its telescoping rear design. If you need to go beyond 200mm, the RF 100-500mm or RF 100-300mm f/2.8 are better choices and both take teleconverters. Just ask and we’ll help you pick.
It uses a telescoping design, which is exactly what lets it be so compact and light when retracted — the smallest 70-200mm f/2.8 Canon makes. The barrel extends as you zoom towards 200mm. Some people prefer an internal zoom that stays fixed; the trade-off here is portability.
Yes — up to 5 stops of optical IS, and more with Coordinated IS on bodies that have in-body stabilisation. Combined with f/2.8, that makes it very capable handheld, even in lower light.
It’s a classic for compressed portraits, weddings and events, candid work and sideline sports — anywhere you want to reach in close and separate your subject from the background at f/2.8. Paired with a 24-70mm it covers the vast majority of professional shoots.
A standard 77mm front thread, so polarisers, NDs and other filters are easy to find. We can add filters to your order.
